Oh what a weekend! Found a great support group just in time to go to the Acromegaly Community Patient Conference in Chicago this past weekend (April 29 - May 1). A weekend of education, knowledge, support, love, hugs, love and meeting my new Acro Family, no.... my new Acro Tribe! There speakers from around the US... all Acromegaly specialists. We gained knowledge and help from a clinical nurse, a neurosurgeon from John Wayne Cancer Institute, an endocrinologist from Northwestern, a wonderful therapists from Los Angeles, and an amazing physiotherapist from Flint, Mi! I'm definitely making an appointment with the physiotherapist from Flint! They even brought in Paul Mitchell students for some make overs (I got my hair all curled up!)!
I think what amazed me the most was how wonderfully supportive and kind all these strangers were! I was the only one out of 130 Acro's (I guess that's what we call ourselves!) who was diagnosed within a month, let alone 6 months. I'm also the only one who hasn't had surgery yet I believe. After telling everyone my story, my new Acro Tribe had so many words of encouragement, positive messages, and so, so many hugs!
There were a few brief, rough moments over the weekend, and I'm not sure if all the information has sunk in yet, but overall, the conference gave me clarity and a new purpose!
I walked into the conference alone and nervous. I walked with a new family, my Acro Tribe!
