The Dreaded and Feared CSF Leak

My biggest fear with this surgery was the complication of getting a CSF leak (cement spinal fluid).

What is it? see link.

Right after I got to my room, I started to have drainage down the back know of my throat and from my nose. At first it was just a little, but by  9pm, it has increased quite a bit, and was steadily dripping. Not to mention the nausea, the headache that won't go away with oxyconine, lack of taste... When I showed the nurse, she said not to be concerned but I told her I wanted to talk to the neurosurgeon. Also, I emailed my ENT and sent her resident over immediately.

Cherie, the ENT Resident confirmed the leak, and Corinna, the neurosurgeon Resident, also confirmed.

Plan of Action
- Get a CT Scan tonight
- Get Tylenol to help with the headache
- Tomorrow morning get a Lumbar Drain put in

If that doesn't work, then they need to got back in to plug me back up.

Wish me loads of luck!

  3. Crap! I'm so sorry. You really advocated for yourself. Proud of ya. The lumbar drain isn't painful. Ask them to try different pain meds. Definitely make sure they give anti nausea meds. 😧😣
